Weaning/Starting solid foods

I recently read Baby-led Weaning: Helping Your Baby to Love Good Food. A friend from the natural parenting group I attend lent it to me. We had already started giving Jr. homemade purees but I wanted to give this a try. The idea is that you give your baby what you're eating. We give her finger shaped soft fruits, veggies, and meat and I let her use her hands instead of spoon feeding her for things like her morning oatmeal. I love it and she loves it. We have a family history of food allergies so I'm still taking caution to introduce one food at a time and am holding off on the usual food allergy culprits. This really is the best way I've found to feed babies and toddlers. This Mom Loves Baby-Led Weaning.

My Paleo Krunch experiment

My husband bought some yummy Paleo Krunch for a tasty snack that fits into his diet. Not only does it taste good but it does good too. I thought I would try to please the man by making my own version of the recipe.

Preheat oven to 325 F

In a large bowl combine:
1/2 cup raw pumpkin seeds
1/2 cup raw sunflower seeds
1 cup almond meal
1 cup shredded, unsweetened coconut
2 cups raw slivered or chopped almonds
In a measuring cup combine:
1/2 cup grapeseed oil  coconut oil
1/2 cup raw honey
1-2 tsp vanilla

Add the wet ingredients to the dry and combine well. Spread in a thin layer over one or two baking sheets with sides (like a jelly roll pan). Place in preheated oven for 25 minutes. Redistribute the Paleo mix and return to the oven for 5 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool on the pan(s) for 5-10 minutes.

I was so happy this little experiment worked out. I love trying new recipes and I scored big points with the hubby. This Mom loves our new Paleo mix. Mmmm.
